Every Hora Tempus clock begins with an idea. It may be inspired by a work of art, a particular material, an architectural detail, a meaningful story or the character of the space in which it will be displayed.

From that first thought, our creative and technical teams work together to develop a timepiece that balances artistic expression with proportion, engineering and reliable timekeeping.

Concept and Design

The creative process begins with sketches, mood boards, material studies and conversations. We explore the scale, form, colour and character of the clock, considering how it will be viewed and how it should feel within its intended setting.

As the idea develops, artistic concepts are translated into accurate production drawings. The relationship between the dial, chapters, hands, movement and surrounding structure is carefully refined before manufacture begins.

Materials with Character

The choice of material is fundamental to every design.

We work with glass, natural slate, copper, brass, bronze, stainless steel, aluminium, timber and composite materials, selecting each for its appearance, texture and ability to contribute to the finished piece.

Some materials arrive with their character already formed by nature. Others are painted, polished, patinated, gilded, etched or shaped to create something entirely new. Natural variation is not treated as an imperfection, but as part of what makes each clock individual.

Modern Precision

Our modern manufacturing capabilities allow ambitious ideas to be turned into accurately made components.

Depending upon the design, these processes may include waterjet and laser cutting, CNC machining, milling, turning, routing and precision folding. This technology gives us control over scale, proportion and repeatability while allowing us to work with materials and forms that would otherwise be difficult to achieve.

Technology provides accuracy, but it is the judgement of the people using it that determines the quality of the result.

Traditional Skills

Alongside modern machinery, we continue to use traditional workshop skills developed through years of practical clockmaking.

Components may be formed by hand, press shaped, welded, soldered, cast, painted, polished or finished with genuine gold leaf. Clock hands are precision cut before being individually shaped and finished by our craftspeople.

These processes cannot always be hurried or automated. They depend upon touch, patience and an understanding of how different materials behave.

Assembly and Timekeeping

Behind every artistic dial is a working timepiece.

The movement, hands and supporting components are selected and developed to suit the size, weight and requirements of the clock. Each piece is carefully assembled, adjusted and tested within our workshop before it is approved for completion.

For more unusual commissions, we can also create controlled movements that go beyond the conventional display of hours and minutes, allowing time, motion and art to interact in unexpected ways.

Created as a Whole

A Hora Tempus clock is not designed in one place and manufactured anonymously somewhere else. The creative, technical and practical stages are brought together by one experienced team.

This continuity allows the original idea to remain present throughout the process, from the first pencil line and choice of material to the final fitting of the hands.

The result is more than an object that tells the time. It is a considered piece of art, engineering and craftsmanship, created to hold attention long after the hour has passed.
